Crazy Hair Day

A few weeks ago Alexis kept telling me about Crazy Hair Day at school. I must have thrown away the paper with the details. Since I know she wouldn't make it up I called the school and asked them when it was. When the lady said she didn't know...she quickly asked the Principle who was nearby. She said, "I'm sorry, ma'am but we don't have a crazy hair day this week."

I thought it was weird. But Alexis was insistent. However, I wouldn't be seeing the teacher again to ask her since I would be working the next 2 days. On Thursdays, Chad get's Alexis ready and off to school seeing as I have patient's starting at 6:30am. But I do get off work in time to pick her up from school.

I was walking to the kindergarten gate and that's when I saw. Her class. Everyone had freaky crazy hair-do's.

Moms started coming up to me and saying: "We were so excited to see what you of all people would do with your daughters hair. Did you forget?"

I felt so bad. I did research. But not enough. Turns out just the Pre-K was having crazy hair day. I knew Alexis was going to be SO sad.

She walked up to me with her one pony tail. (Pulled straight back..with the front starting to fall out of the rubber band.) Her head down. Shoulder's slouched. "I told Dad it was crazy hair day! He didn't believe me."

It was so sad. So many mother's heard. Even the teacher and she just looked at me so sad for Alexis. So the motherly-instinct shot through me...

"Alexis, I know everyone's hair looks crazy...but did you tell everyone that YOUR DAD did your hair today. That's crazy. Dad's never do hair. I bet no one else's Dad did their hair. And yours did. NOW THAT'S CRAZY!"

The teacher joined in on the excitement. But Alexis wasn't having any of it. She just looked at me with that pathetic look and said, "That's not crazy!"

I tried to make it better. But it's true...it was a pathetic shot at turning the disappointment around. I guess it's hard for a 5 year old to see how crazy it is for a Dad to do your hair when it's done by him EVERY Thursday.

So there you have it. I don't have it all together. If I did I would have known and could have done her hair the night before. But I missed the boat. At least there's a crazy hair day every year. We won't miss that again. I guarantee it!

I side with Alexis on this one...I've heard that Chad can pull off a really sweet hair-do.
